GEORGIA BOARD OF DENTISTRY AND BOTOX
In June of 2012, the Georgia Board of Dentistry voted to adopt Board Rule 150-14-.04 entitled “Administration of Injectable Pharmacologic”. The new Board Rule became effective on July 9, 2012. The new Board Rule should be carefully reviewed by all dentists who wish to utilize injectable pharmacologics, including hyaluronic acid (such as Restylane), fillers (such as collagen), Botulinum Toxin Type A (such as Botox), or similar products approved by the Federal Food and Drug Administration. The Rule provides that dentists may administer an injectable pharmacologic only after having completed a Board-approved post-doctoral course.

COSMETIC INJECTABLES WITH OUR DENTISTS
Our dentist’s continually take continuing education courses to understand the uses of cosmetic injectables such as Botox and Juvederm for dental patients. At each one of the continuing education classes they receive hands-on experience to achieve desired results for their patients. They take their existing background of knowing the specific function of each facial, head and neck muscle and how first hand how these specific muscles relate and affect the bite, facial contours and influence the aging process. As general dentist’s offering cosmetic dental procedures, our associates work in the facial area daily and have an expanded understanding of how these muscles work together.
WHAT IS BOTOX?
BOTOX® is an FDA approved neurotoxin derived from the botulinum toxin that debuted in 2002 and is administered only by trained healthcare professionals for temporary relaxation of facial muscles to relieve the look of moderate to severe from lines for patients ranging in ages of 18 to 65. This non-surgical treatment works to block overactive muscles from creating deeper looking fine lines and wrinkles in the facial area by reducing significant muscle activity in areas where moderate to severe lines form.
BOTOX® Cosmetic, Facts as listed on their patient website:
- Introduced in 2002, is the first botulinum toxin to be approved by the FDA to temporarily treat moderate to severe glabella lines between the brows.
- Approximately 11.8 million1 BOTOX® Cosmetic procedures have been administered in the United States since 2002.
- 92% of 303 patients surveyed were satisfied with the results of their BOTOX® Cosmetic experience.
WHAT IS JUVEDERM?
Young, healthy- looking skin contains an abundance of hyaluronic acid (HA), which diminishes dryness, and helps protect your skin against the aging process. As we age, environmental factors such as diet, sunlight and aging reduce natural occurring HA process resulting in unwanted facial wrinkles, fine lines, loss of elasticity and the disliked parentheses lines surrounding your nose and mouth.
Using a dermal filler like JUVÉDERM® is a safe and effective way to replace the Hyaluronic acid your skin has lost, bringing back its volume and smoothing away facial wrinkles and folds. As described on the Juvederm website: “Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring molecule. Much like a sponge, its primary function is to bind and absorb water, which creates volume in the face. In this way, Hyaluronic acid can be thought of as the body’s internal moisturizer. But, as we age, HA diminishes, which contributes to the presence of lines and folds. JUVÉDERM® injectable gel works to correct this by restoring hyaluronic acid in your skin, helping to diminish wrinkles and nasolabial folds.
JUVÉDERM® dermal filler allows you to see visible anti-aging results instantly. It is a nonsurgical, physician-administered injectable treatment for nasolabial folds and other facial wrinkles. Using a fine needle, our dentist’s ease JUVÉDERM® under the skin to smoothly fill or “plump” the soft tissues of the dermis. This adds volume to the site and diminishes the appearance of wrinkles, lines and folds instantaneously. While there are a variety of hyaluronic acid fillers, JUVÉDERM is uniquely formulated and has proven to last for some patients up to one year.
