This is Dental Assistant Recognition Week, and a good opportunity to examine the valuable role they play in an office. Dental Assistants work directly with the doctor. They are responsible for assisting him in performing restorations, taking radiographs and impressions, completing the necessary paperwork for each patient, performing infection control procedures, and ordering supplies to name only a few duties. A dental assistant may obtain their training on the job or in a training program in the state of Georgia. In order to be a CDA, or certified dental assistant, attending a certified training program and then passing a three part exam- General Chairside exam, Radiation Health and Safety exam, and Infection Control exam is required. An EDDA or expanded duty dental assistant requires additional training above the level of a CDA, and the successful completion of a competency exam.
