Preventative dentistry and healthy mouth cleanings most commonly refer to dental hygiene cleanings. The American Dental Association recommends each patient have two annual cleanings to main a healthy mouth by removing plaque and tartar in addition to proper home care to maintain maximum oral health. Performed approximately every 6 months, professional hygiene cleanings are performed by a licensed Hygienist and overseen by dentist who provides a dental examination. At these visits X-rays may be taken to aid the doctors diagnosis and assist the Hygienist in identifying any areas that may require a more thorough cleaning to remove excess tartar, stain and plaque. In addition, the American Dental Association recommends children begin seeing a dentist at age 3 to aid the development of healthy dentition and identify any early concerns.
