New Links Between Smoking and Health Risks

While the links between tobacco used and heart disease, stroke, and cancer are well documented there is now evidence that tobacco smoke can assist the bacteria responsible for dental diseases as well. It allows the bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis to multiply and overwhelm the immune system and contributing to periodontal disease. Additionally tobacco smoke promotes biofilm formation which increases the population of Streptococcus mutans and other bacteria which contribute to tooth decay.
