One of the most frustrating aspects of having a child in braces is hearing that they aren’t keeping their teeth clean. This accumulation of plaque around the brackets can lead to decalcification or white spots on the teeth. When this occurs it is a sign of the tooth enamel weakening to such a degree that it will form decay either during the orthodontic process or later. There are some tools available to help your child remove the plaque. First is investing in an electric toothbrush. Secondly, incorporating a fluoride rinse twice daily to help inhibit plaque formation. Finally the floss picks and proxybrushes to assist in removing plaque around the wires and brackets. In some cases, it is worth the money to pay out of pocket for an additional cleaning each year.
