Yes, You Can Let Your Kids Chew Gum!

Chewing sugarless gum for twenty minutes after a meal can help prevent tooth decay. Chewing gum increases saliva flow. Saliva washes away the food debris, neutralizes acids, and fights oral bacteria. It also carries calcium and phosphate to strengthen tooth enamel. Look for gum with the ADA seal which are sweetened with aspartame, xylitol, mannitol, and sorbitol. While excessively chewing gum is not recommended for adults who can sometimes aggravate occlusion or joint problems it is fine to “treat” your child to sugarless gum after a meal.
